The anti-perforation plate in safety shoes is designed to prevent the shoe from being pierced when working in environments where there is a risk of stepping on dangerous sharp objects, such as nails, splinters, or similar hazards.
Inside the shoe, the anti-perforation plate is placed just below the insole and, according to current regulations, it must be designed in such a way that it can be removed without damaging the footwear.
Generally, anti-perforation plates for safety shoes are made of steel or fabric. Steel plates are more resistant but also heavier (90 grams compared to about 50 grams for fabric ones). They are the ideal choice for protecting feet from very small, hard, and sharp objects. On the other hand, fabric anti-perforation plates offer greater flexibility, are lighter, and provide better insulation from heat, cold, and electricity. Additionally, unlike steel plates, they protect the entire surface of the shoe and do not trigger metal detectors.
According to European regulations that determine the requirements for safety shoes, anti-perforation plates are found in safety footwear certified EN ISO 20345 (protection categories S1P, S3) and in work footwear certified EN ISO 20347.
